What's Living Inside You?

Learning to Unleash the Inner Warrior Beast to Rock the Hair & Life God Created you to Have!

“For you formed my inward parts; you covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” psalm 139:13-14

Too many times we look for others to compliment us—to approve our thoughts and acknowledge our accomplishments. When we don’t get the attention we need, we tend to form negative beliefs about our very existence and then seek to make unnecessary changes to ourselves in hopes of getting the accolades we so desperately desire. Truth be told, we all are just a bunch of needy folks who spend our energy and efforts focused on the wrong attention. I believe we all are capable of having a successful life all while rocking our God-given glorious hair. After all, our Heavenly Father made us in His image; He even knows the exact number of hairs we have on our head. We already have the key to unlock these possibilities living inside us. We just need to look deep within and dig it up. It’s called faith a.k.a belief a.ka. “motto.” A motto is just the motivation we need to wake up and unleash the inner warrior beast we all have eagerly waiting to fight the enemy. We can have one motto for our total lives—physical and spiritual—or we can have a different motto for every area of life such as our businesses, our finances, and even our hair.

A few years ago, my life emotionally, financially, physically, and spiritually was not at the level I wanted. In 2015, after being in a terrible relationship and fed up with being stuck in the same position in life, I decided to make some major changes. I had been separated from God for almost 20 years so I sought a new church home that would feed me spiritually through pure biblical teaching. Shortly after joining my new church home, I made other changes as well like chopping off all my hair to return natural. The year before I had tried transitioning but gave up after only three short months. Why? My patience, attitude, and finances were too poor to deal with the hidden beauty that natural hair offers. I can wholeheartedly say that starting my spiritual walk and natural hair journey have been the most exhilarating and liberating feelings I've ever experienced. There were many powerful scriptures that helped me get to where I am today, but I credit Proverbs 3:5-6 with having the most impact. It says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” After meditating on these two verses I have been believing in God for the things that are not in my life right now but that I know are soon to come. This is called faith! Therefore, my total life's motto is "God is in control!" With God in control of everything in my life, I completely trust that He will lead me and guide me along every path. Even when bumps rise up in the middle of the road or unforeseen potholes appear out of nowhere, I know my Lord is in the driver’s seat. When detours occur and impeding storms block my view, I need not worry because “God is in control.” He knows exactly what He is doing. When I experience delays, I count it all joy because I know God made a timely pit stop to refuel my soul and recharge my body so it can endure the rest of the journey. As for my hair, my motto is “just listen.” I believe my hair knows what it needs so I “just listen” to it and not others. Yes, I watch different hair tutorials, but I don’t get caught up in the comparison game because we were all made differently. Because my hair is unique, what works for one naturalista may not work for me. Therefore, I focus on what my hair wants and loves.

Just like I have discovered what’s living inside me, you can too! Start today and think about your passionate desires and values. Then create a short sentence, phrase, or even a single word and implement it everyday. Listen to it, feed it, and walk it out. Follow these steps below!

  1. Search, Stop & Listen! Often times the reason we’re not reaching our full potential is because we’re trying to do everything else except what’s already been purposed in us to do. Another scripture that I love is, “For I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” This scripture is from Jeremiah 29:11 and it reaffirms that a prosperous life (and hair) is already inside you. You just have to stop, be still, and listen to your inner warrior. Need help? Just ask yourself, “What gets me really excited. What do I really love doing?” SN: This principle applies to our hair as well. Our hair wants what it wants so listen to it!
  2. Feel it & Feed it! Once you start listening to your inner warrior, commit yourself to stop blocking it from speaking! Don’t continue doing things that aren’t satisfying and rewarding. Don’t suppress it with negative energy. Your passion and desire is just burning to come out. It wants to explode so that you can begin to flourish. Feel it and feed it. Don’t know how? Remember Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Feed your inner beast positive affirmations. Consume the Word of God daily. SN: After listening to what your hair wants (needs), feed it! If it’s dry, give it moisture. If it’s damaged and breaking, treat it to some protein.
  3. Write it down & walk it out! Now that you have commenced to feeding your inner beast, it’s time to write the vision and walk it out. Grab some colorful sticky notes and write down those motivating beliefs. Again, you can stick to one motto if you like or you can have several. Then place the sticky note in a prominent place where you can see it everyday. Imagine having a bathroom mirror full of sticky notes! It’d be kind of like a sticky note vision/motto board. If the bathroom mirror isn’t a good place, then just create a motto (vision) board. Not sure how to rock this step? One perfect motto worth inserting here is, “Ain’t nothing to it but to do it.” Don’t let fear stop you from rocking the hair and life God intended you to have. In 2 Timothy 1:7 it says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” SN: Get in the habit of writing things down especially when it comes to caring for your hair. Start a natural hair journal so you can record products you use and their ingredients, food you eat that may affect your hair, hair goals, etc. You probably should even snap a picture to keep as a reference for later in your hair journey.

Remember, faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. If you believe it, it will come to pass. What’s your motto?

Until next time,
Much love and many blessings!
